In this field beta emitting radio nuclides are used to treat the patients. This is highly useful for patients who are suffering from excruciating pain due to secondary deposits of cancer. When a suitable radionuclide that emits beta rays, is administered to the patient, it is avidly taken up by the cancer cells. The beta rays emitted from these isotopes are totally absorbed within the tumour volume. The absorbed beta rays destroy the cancer cells and remove the pain. A single dose will keep the pain away for more than six months. For example, a patient of prostatic cancer suffering from severe pain due to secondary deposit will lead a normal life for six months if a single dose of Strontium-89 (Metastron-89Sr) is given. Similarly, Samarium-153(153Sm-EDTMPA), Phosphorous-32(32P-Sodium orthophosphate) can be used for the same purpose. Our centre is fully equipped with all the necessary infrastructure to treat the patients with beta therapy. .
